Goveg.com, an offshoot organization of PETA, has announced the results of its "World’s Sexiest Vegetarian" poll. "Celebrities cite many reasons for [vegetarianism], from avoiding the cruelty that is inherent in all meat production to improving their health and energy levels and helping the environment," Go Veg said, and declared Prince (the artist formerly known as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince") the sexiest male vegetarian and Kristen Bell the sexiest female vegetarian. Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, and Joaquin Phoenix were among the runners up. No word on whether any of them were upset enough by the results to jump camp and compete for the title of "World’s Sexiest Bratwurst-Lover."

Friday, the fictional film Fast Food Nation, based on the book of the same name, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Kris Kristofferson, Greg Kinnear, and Avril Lavigne, was shot in a slaughterhouse and is reportedly very graphic. It’s one of several films being considered for the Palme D’or and will be released in the States in October. Sources say the movie is as at least as compelling and informative as it is gross, if not more so.

On June 1st, one week from today, Heal the Bay throws its annual Bring Back the Beach dinner. Heal the Bay is honoring Gabrielle Reece, Laird Hamilton, Leonard Armato, and the eco-surfing association SIMA at this year’s celebration. If you’re in Los Angeles and have a fistful of extra money, you’ll probably want to go. It’s not too late to buy individual tickets or a whole table. Even if you think surfers are obnoxious and the fun of volleyball was ruined for you by tall, hyper-competitive older cousins at a very young age, you’re sure to enjoy the event. Last year’s attendees included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Martin Short, Bonnie McKee, and The Bangles. The rest of us (poor schmucks and/or non-Californians) hope you have fun.

A 14 acre garden in South Los Angeles used to grow fruit and vegetables by more than 300 families is in trouble; developer Ralph Horowitz bought the land from the city in 2003 for five million dollars and has demanded nearly three times that much to give the land back to the public. Joan Baez, Julia Butterfly Hill, and Darryl Hannah are protesting on the site to support the community garden. Baez, Hill, and others have taken to sitting in trees above the land as a means of conveying their point. Let’s pray that the answer that’s blowin’ in the wind isn’t blowin’ too hard.

Sadly, it looks as though not even movies can overcome the political divide in Washington. Earlier this week, President Bush responded to the question of whether he would watch Al Gore’s global warming doc An Inconvenient Truth with two words: "Doubt it." Gore fans reacted by saying, "C’mon, Mr. President, it’s not like we’re asking you to read a book."
