In a Steamy Summer, Green Building Is Hot

In a Steamy Summer, Green Building Is HotPosted by Hillary Rosner on August 17, 2006 - 7:59am.

Green building isn’t just big business—it’s also become big news. Maybe it’s the intense heat that’s still beating down on most of the country. Or maybe it’s just the next best real estate story now that the housing market has slowed. But around the country, and particularly in major cities, newspapers have suddenly become hot for green building stories.

The San Francisco Chronicle ran a story last weekend about Hunters Point, a section of the city, according to the paper, that’s “known for its toxic soil and polluted air.” Turns out it might soon be known for running on renewable energy. A new development in the former navy yard will contain 1600 new homes, built out of “environmentally friendly” materials and powered almost entirely by solar cells (the rest of the electricity would be hydro-generated).

She also served as the communications director for the Center for Resource Solutions in San Francisco. Tegen talked to LIME about wind energy, the future of renewables, and what you can do to increase your commitment to wind.

GE Brings Good Energy to Life in Portugal

GE Brings Good Energy to Life in PortugalPosted by Hillary Rosner on June 7, 2006 - 10:59am.

As the Three Gorges Dam project plunged ahead in China yesterday, in Portugal a kinder, gentler form of power generation got underway. Construction began Tuesday on the world's largest solar power plant, which will power 8,000 homes when it goes online next winter. The power station consists of 52,000 photovoltaic panels, covering 150 acres of a sunny Portuguese hillside 125 miles south of Lisbon.

Is There Such a Thing as Guilt-Free Driving?

Is There Such a Thing as Guilt-Free Driving?Posted by Hillary Rosner on April 25, 2006 - 4:21pm.

There are lots of ways to reduce your carbon footprint, or the amount of greenhouse gas emissions you generate as a result of your daily life. Trade in your car for one with better gas mileage, for example. And walk, bike, or take public transportation whenever possible. But chances are you must drive sometimes - so one way to counterbalance the carbon emissions from burning gasoline is to help build renewable energy sources like wind farms.
