Fixing up some eggs or chicken strips for the dog might have seemed crazy a while ago. But not in the wake of a pet food recall.

Lately, it seems that some pampered pooches live better than I do.
If I wax poetic about how my cat litter smells like Christmas, would you think I was nuts? I have a very sensitive nose, and with two feline beasties I am forever battling that Two Cat House Smell. I can’t stand the heavy perfumes in most litters, and my cats have let me know in their own catty ways that they hate it too. And I don’t like the idea of using strip-mined clay litter from China that goes right into the landfill. So I am always trying something new – wheat litter, orange peel litter, newspaper litter. I am usually left sadly disappointed; scoop in hand, sticky, stinky mess in litter box.
We here at LIME's "Planet" section are big dog lovers (meaning we have big love for all dogs, not that we love big dogs - I mean, we do love big dogs but also small ones), so we couldn't resist calling attention to a great story on the BBC's web site. It's about the history and evolution of dogs, as told through an exhibition called "Dogs: Man-Made Friends," on view at a branch of the UK's Natural HIstory Museum.
The ASPCA turns 140 years old today. Landmark buildings all over the country will be lit up in orange, the ASPCA's official color, to honor America's oldest animal welfare organization.
Here in the ASPCA's hometown, where socialite Henry Bergh founded the animal rights non-profit group in 1866 after witnessing the severe beating of a New York City workhorse, we'll be commemorating this milestone with, among other things, the unveiling of the world's largest dog biscuit in Manhattan's Union Square.
