California Dreaming: The Spiritual Tradition?

California Dreaming: The Spiritual Tradition?Posted by Spiros Antonopoulos on July 10, 2006 - 7:22am.

When John Muir, a wilderness mystic and founder of the Sierra Club, wrote, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe,” he was reflecting on his profound relationship with California’s pristine alpine wilderness. But Erik Davis posits something further. In his kaleidoscopic history of spiritual California, The Visionary State, Davis proposes that Muir was also making room for an innovative, new “rootless tradition.” California dreaming, it seems, has it own dream logic.

The Green Room: Sexy Vegetarians

Posted by Joshua W. Jackson on May 25, 2006 - 4:12pm.

Goveg.com, an offshoot organization of PETA, has announced the results of its "World’s Sexiest Vegetarian" poll. "Celebrities cite many reasons for [vegetarianism], from avoiding the cruelty that is inherent in all meat production to improving their health and energy levels and helping the environment," Go Veg said, and declared Prince (the artist formerly known as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince") the sexiest male vegetarian and Kristen Bell the sexiest female vegetarian. Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, and Joaquin Phoenix were among the runners up. No word on whether any of them were upset enough by the results to jump camp and compete for the title of "World’s Sexiest Bratwurst-Lover."

The Green Room: Gwyneth's Yoga Lesson

Posted by Joshua W. Jackson on May 19, 2006 - 4:43pm.

Gwyneth Paltrow is scheduled to teach what is probably the most expensive yoga lesson ever taught. In an auction for Prince Charles’ charity, a fan paid $50,000.00 (no, we didn’t add three extra zeros…) for a private session with Gwyneth. "Someone has spent a great deal of money on it so I’m going to have to really come up with an excellent plan. Unfortunately, I can’t do it in the nude or anything to make it really exceptional…" Paltrow said. She went on to assure the bidder that she would do everything within her power to not make the lesson any more awkward than she just did.

Julia's prediction about getting media attention turns out to be right on, but she never anticipated that they would focus on her more than they focus on the forest she and her colleagues are fighting to save. Julia deals with the negative side effects of being depicted as a superhero.

This award-winning documentary reveals the extraordinary transformation and spiritual journey of a 23 year old woman who climbed 200 feet up into a redwood tree and lived there for two years in order to save the thousand year old tree from destruction. Julia lived on a platform the size of a coffee table, survived the ordeal of a helicopter attack and was nearly killed when 90-mph winds blew her off the tree and threw to the forest floor. As a result of her courageous act of civil disobedience, Julia is the youngest person thus far inducted into the Ecology Hall of Fame.
