Heard the latest when it comes to hot beverages?
Adding milk to tea appears to inhibit the health benefits of the world's most popular drink. Will this news prompt people to change lifelong habits?
Put your mug down.
Green tea -- that miracle beverage said to stave off heart disease, strokes and cancer -- probably isn't much of a miracle after all.
Summer is upon us and bathing suits beckon. For legs that are smooth and beach-ready it's important to first understand what cellulite is and then to assess the most effective and safe options for controlling it.
The dimples are the result of a simple breakdown of connective tissue directly below the skin and while they can be reduced cellulite never completely disappears. But things aren't all bad. There are several things you can do to significantly change the appearance of cellulite-prone zones. Exercise is key as is a healthy diet and lots of water. Algae extracts detoxify and increase metabolic function while green tea has been found to actually burn fat. Massage therapy also treats cellulite by clearing the lymphatic system and increasing circulation.
"Bioflavonoids" is one of those terms that looks technical and perhaps even slightly unpleasant on the page, but in actuality does a lot of good. Bioflavonoids are the substances that give plants bright colors and that have also been found to improve health and vitality in a number of ways.
There are hundreds of bioflavonoids - citrus bioflavonoids, soy isoflavones, proanthocyanidins found in red wine and grapeseed, flavanols present in cocoa, tea, and grapeseed, and quercitin found in onions, tea, and berries - but they all have similar health benefits. They are anti-inflammatory, slow aging, decrease the risk of cancer, and can encourage healthy circulation.
I spent the final days of 2005 stuck in a hyper-caffeinated vortex of peppermint lattes and gingerbread mochas. ‘Twas the season, ‘twas the stress, but my boxes of herbal, green, and black tea remained jammed against the back of the pantry with three cans of kidney beans and an old box of couscous.
I don't know how it happened, but suddenly I was a coffee drinker.
Sometimes I'd catch the smiling eyes of the Swami glinting off a box of Yogi Tea when I reached past for a coffee filter, and I'd feel a flash of nostalgia for the gentle life of the tea drinker, but mostly I chugged my café – light, no sugar – with abandon.
