Aromatherapy and Pregnancy

Aromatherapy and PregnancyPosted by Marisa Belger on May 18, 2006 - 8:35am.

Sushi, saunas, raw cheese, microwaves, herbal medicines, alcohol - for pregnant women the list of things to avoid can seem especially long. But there is a healing modality that is not only acceptable to receive during pregnancy (in the final two trimesters) but is also designed to alleviate many of the discomforts that come up during those nine months.

As with any form of medicine, aromatherapy should be approached with caution preferably with the guidance of an experienced aromatherapist. Essential oils should not be used during the first trimester and the many oils (basil, cedarwood, cinnamon, clary sage, clove, cypress, fennel, hyssop, jasmine, juniper, lemongrass, myrrh, parsley, pennyroyal, peppermint, rosemary, sweet marjoram, and thyme) should be avoided throughout the entire pregnancy

Shades of Earl Grey

Earl Grey is one of my favorite black teas. I especially like Mariage Freres Earl Grey Imperial, and Zingerman’s organic Earl Grey is so potent it could pass for potpourri. But if Earl Grey’s so great, The Republic of Tea’s Earl Greyer is even more so. There’s the red Earl Grey Rooibus, and the green Earl Grey Sencha. There’s even a white Earl Grey.

The essence of all these Earl Greys is bergamot. But it’s not the bergamot we gardeners grow, although that native American herb is used to make Oswego tea. To confuse matters further, Oswego tea is not only an antidote for headaches and congestion, it’s also a great food blog.

The bergamot that gives Earl Grey its wonderful fragrance is a small Italian citrus fruit, whose aromatic peel provides the essential oil used in Earl Grey as well as in perfumes, going all the way back to the original Eau de Cologne from 17th century Germany.

Still confused? Whatever you do, don’t go to bergamot.com, home to ‘bergamot-flavored blogs;’ it appears to be written mostly in Japanese. Too bad for us Earl Grey-loving gaiijin.

Interests: Horseback riding, watching the silence of the snow, obviously anything creative, cooking
Inspiration: Like most of you, when I heard of recycling to save the earth, I naturally assumed I needed to separate my plastics, newspapers and glass. I was helping. That was all I needed to do. Then one day, I was searching around for something fun, some art, and I came across this abstract piece. It was gorgeous - it looked like a naturally formed wave of icy white water bursting into the air. When I looked closer at it, I saw that it was made from recycled plastic caps. I was in shock. What kind of imagination and talent does that take to look at a plastic cap and see more to it then what it actually is? How can someone be so ingenious that they can take something that we normally throw away and create such a piece of beauty with it? This is the thought process that I could not stop pondering and it took over my mind, body and soul and soon enough became my muse. I began Earth's Journey for this reason. I wanted to show the world that there was more to saving the earth than just recycling. There is beauty in things we can't even imagine, and so many ways to help our planet flourish. There are products out there that we all could use to completely decorate, furnish and run a home... all environmentally safe. You can buy organic bedding, non-toxic cleaning detergents, solar power, or make a change in a small way by using energy-efficient light bulbs. But the best part of recycling and being eco-friendly is the beauty that you'll find here, with all of our different artisans. As you can see I'm very passionate about this type of artistic creativity, and I hope you will be too. I invite you to sit back, relax and ... Be Inspired by Green!
