On another forum, someone asked the members to list the things they have done to benefit the environment ... I started making my list and realized that I've doe a lot more over gradually over the years than I realized ....
1. Resuable canvas shopping bags
2. I try to buy as many organic [0] foods as possible- for myself and my birds.
3. I pay all of my bills online (no stamps to buy, no envelopes, etc) and receive most of them electronically as well.
4. I try to consolidate errands into one long trip rather than making multiple trips.
5. I recycle as much as I can at home and at work.
6. I used solid bamboo flooring in a recent remodel.
7. I've begun using non-VOC paints.
8. I drive a low-emission vehicle ... the gas mileage is not as great as I would like it to be, but it is very good for the type of vehicle.
9. I look for furniture made from FSC wood or reclaimed wood
10. I've switched totally to organic soaps and shampoos, use biodegradable cleaners, and non-phosphate detergents at home
11. I buy as many products as I can that are made of recycled materials
12. I buy Energy-star appliances and electronic equipment whenever I can.
13. I made the "Green Switch" to TVA's Green-e program and now get 50% of my home's electricity from renewable sources ... I'm intending to increase that percentage soon. TVA charges $4 per 150 kWh block in addition to your utility company's normal electricity rate.
14. As I need new towels, sheets, etc ... I am replacing them with organic cotton and similar materials.
I am sure many of you do more, but I surprised myself when I started listing things I've done over the past few years. I made changes gradually and they snuck up on me.
