For the Love of Chocolate

It's a fact that has been pounded into most women's heads by doctors, the media, and the FDA since we were in pigtails: it is important to consume adequate amounts of calcium on a daily basis in order to build strong bones, prevent bone loss, and avoid osteoporosis, which afflicted so many of our grandmothers later in life. And yet, with all the resources and information available to us, it's surprising that so many women still don't get enough calcium in their diets (recommended daily intake for women ages 20 to 50 is 1,000 mg).

For years, I've struggled to heed the advice that I know so well, but with little success. Calcium pills make me nauseous. I love cheese, ice cream, and almost all dairy products, but most contain sky-rocketing amounts of fat and calories, and let's face it: there's only so much low-fat cottage cheese a waist-line conscious girl can eat. I was intrigued when I first saw the chocolate calcium chews in my drug store, but sorely disappointed by their chalky texture, artificial flavor, and the fact that they are incredibly difficult to swallow.

So, when recently presented with two bags of Adora chocolate calcium supplements—a product which boldly claims "Calcium the gourmet way"—I was skeptical, to say the least. But with one bite, my doubts were put to rest. Smooth, rich, and creamy, it was a shock to the palette, considering that these "disks," as the company calls them, are actually vitamins and not, technically, candies. The genius creators at Adora have finally come up with a tasty, viable solution for calcium deficient women in the United States (especially for those of us plagued by a sweet tooth). With 500mg of calcium and vitamins D and K for absorption, the disks come in all-natural milk and dark chocolate varieties, and each contains a mere 30 calories, 2g-3g of sugar, and 3g total carbohydrate. Neatly wrapped in aluminum, the vegetarian-friendly morsels are easily portable, which comes in handy for the weekly trudge to work. The daily recommended intake is one to three times per day, preferably with meals.

While the Adora chocolate calcium supplements are truly delicious (the act of not eating the entire bag in one sitting was a rigorous test of self-restraint), the term "gourmet" might be considered a slight exaggeration by true chocolate aficionados. The texture of the chocolate more closely resembles that of a Hershey's bar rather than a Godiva truffle, but the Adora dandies are, nonetheless, a simple indulgence that can be enjoyed guilt-free (if taken as directed).

And unlike many other vitamin supplements on the market, they won't break the bank. A bag of 30 will only set you back $7.99, and they're available across the United States at such stores as Whole Foods, Walgreens, and Target.

I too get nauseous from regular calcium supplements. I'll try these and see if my tender tummy can tolerate them! Usually, my palate says YUM YUM, but my gut says UH OH, better start heading to the bathroom!!!

It's the phosphorous in dairy and milk (in addition to what it does to the body's pH level--turning it acidic) that renders the calcium in them useless, so this is a brilliant way for those who need adjunct calcium to get it while circumventing those pitfalls and perhaps adding the phytochemicals and anti-oxidants found in cocoa.     Bravo.
