Remember BenGay? There was a time when the cool, tingly ointment was the only way to quickly relieve the tenderness associated with sore muscles. But BenGay is completely synthetic — check out Skin Deep's breakdown of the salve's toxicity. Though methyl salicylate, the chief ingredient in the BenGay, is naturally found in Sweet Birch (a.k.a. Black Birch) and wintergreen, massive manufacturer Pfizer still synthesizes it.
Today, there are a handful of natural ointments that treat sore muscles, tender bruises, and various joint ailments. Arnica is the primary ingredient in most of these salves. The plant is prized for it's anti-inflammatory and pain reducing qualities.
The folks at Ideal Bite recommend the following natural salves:
- Kuumba Made St. John's Arnica Rub: eucalyptus, ginger, cinnamon and lavender soothes injuries, sore muscles, arthritis, bruises, reduces swelling, eases fibrosis and varicose veins.
- Weleda Arnica Ointment: treat bruises, sprains, sore and aching muscles.
- Mountain Rose Injur Heal Balm: great for use after arduous exercise, exertion or injury. Organic Arnica Flowers, St. John's Wort and calendula prevent, relieve and reduce swelling, bruises and pain.
- Badger Sore Muscle Rub: 70% organic, with hints of ginger, cardamom, lemongrass, and sage.
