Big Decision? Your Subconscious May Have the Answer

Thinking isn’t always the most efficient method of making a decision. While it’s practical to actively deliberate the small choices in life — what flavor ice cream to have after dinner, what route to walk to work, etc. — big decisions are better left to the unconscious mind.

A study published this week in Science found that “deliberation-without-attention” or unconscious deliberation is often the best way to make the best choice. If you’re faced with a big decision like buying a car or house, researchers recommend gathering all of the vital information and then sitting (or sleeping) on it while your unconscious processes the data.

According to the study, our conscious mind has the tendency to lead us astray because it has a low capacity for thought while the subconscious can integrate more information.

Do you often sleep on it or are you the spontaneous type? Please comment below.
