Pregnancy Hormone Offers Hope for MS
February 25, 2007 - 9:52am
from Scientific American
A new study reports that the hormone prolactin, which increases during pregnancy, mended nerve damage in mice. The hormone boosts the production of the neuron insulator myelin, a reduction of which is linked to multiple sclerosis.

great news!!!!

How encouraging!!!! I had thought the opposite was true.  Doctors told a friend of mine with MS to not get pregnant.  I wonder if this will change the outlook for many women who want to have babies now that this study has come out.  I hope so.  You never want to go on a path where you fear the outcome, espcially when a child is involved.  Great news!!!!

what do doctors know about love?
by carolinagarciaw on April 19, 2007 - 4:01pm
Here in the Netherlands, doctors do not discourage women who have MS from having children. Yes, it helps to have a strong support network but isn't that true for all women? Let us not forget that children are a great source of comfort, joy, and love. What clear-thinking doctor would not encourage a MS patient to pursue her heart's desire to have a family if she really wants one? It has been known for some time (at least 30 years) that MS symptoms decrease during pregnancy, by the way. As a MS patient myself I am pessimistic about a "cure" being found that is "one size fits all". The disease manifests itself in such a variety of symptoms that I can hardly imagine that one drug will be the medical solution. carolina garciaw
