The problem with these new CFL bulbs is they contain mercury. Breaking one can make the entire room toxic with unsafe levels of mercury thousands of times higher than the "safe" level.
Do an internet search on CFL and mercury. There are some terrible stories out there. There was one just a couple of days ago about a woman who broke one in her baby's room and called the poison control center to see if there was anything to worry about.
Her daughter's room had to be sealed off until they can afford thousands of dollars to decontaminate it from the mercury. From just ONE bulb breaking.
I liked the thought of these bulbs when they came out, but now I am considering stocking up on the old ones, maybe full spectrum lights, since, of course, they have now made it law that we will have to use the toxic ones.
Just when you think they might be doing something better for our environment...yikes!
I wonder what they will do when a lot of people start showing up with mercury poisoning...
I did a quick check on snopes.com and found that your story is some sort of urban legend. The amount of mercury in a CFL is about the size of a period at the end of a sentence.
