How To Recycle

We currently don't recycle in our household. (Our city does not do a pick up) However, I really want to start collecting recyclables and dropping them off myself. So my question is....
What are the rules and regulations of recycling. Are there any items that aren't supposed to be put in the plastic, paper, or glass bins?
Any tips or advice is appreciated.
