On another forum, someone asked the members to list the things they have done to benefit the environment ... I started making my list and realized that I've doe a lot more over gradually over the years than I realized ....
1. Resuable canvas shopping bags
2. I try to buy as many organic foods as possible- for myself and my birds.
3. I pay all of my bills online (no stamps to buy, no envelopes, etc) and receive most of them electronically as well.
4. I try to consolidate errands into one long trip rather than making multiple trips.
5. I recycle as much as I can at home and at work.
6. I used solid bamboo flooring in a recent remodel.
7. I've begun using non-VOC paints.
8. I drive a low-emission vehicle ... the gas mileage is not as great as I would like it to be, but it is very good for the type of vehicle.
9. I look for furniture made from FSC wood or reclaimed wood
10. I've switched totally to organic soaps and shampoos, use biodegradable cleaners, and non-phosphate detergents at home
11. I buy as many products as I can that are made of recycled materials
12. I buy Energy-star appliances and electronic equipment whenever I can.
13. I made the "Green Switch" to TVA's Green-e program and now get 50% of my home's electricity from renewable sources ... I'm intending to increase that percentage soon. TVA charges $4 per 150 kWh block in addition to your utility company's normal electricity rate.
14. As I need new towels, sheets, etc ... I am replacing them with organic cotton and similar materials.
I am sure many of you do more, but I surprised myself when I started listing things I've done over the past few years. I made changes gradually and they snuck up on me.

Yeahh I try my hardest but my list wouldn't get as long as yours!
When I get older I'm going to have an amazing list! haha.
But again, good job!

Great job!
1. I just purchased reusable bags for the grocery store as well!
2. I buy organic food where available, but being a picky eater this proves to be difficult.
3. Just switched my bills other than the two credit cards over to paperless.
4. Since I live about 20+ miles from everything, trip consolidation is quite easy for me - even when I'm staying at my boyfriend's whose house is very close to everything - combining errands is just second nature. Unfortunately, living so far away means I use a lot of gas anyway.
5. I do my best at recycling paper and plastics but I'm sure if I thought out of the box I could do better...
6. I'd like to get a hybrid for my next vehicle, but I don't see too many with 4WD and I'd also like to stick with a Mazda and they don't have any out yet...
7. My friend is a representative for Melaleuca, and over the past several months I've switched to their phosphate/bleach-free products. They feel better to me and are better for the environment.
8. Don't buy many new appliances (ours are mostly old and energy-inefficient, I know, but can't afford new ones yet) but when I do, I buy Energy Star.
9. Unfortunately I just bought four new sets of sheets before I knew about the bamboo ones, so next time I need linens I will look into that!
10. I use a SIGG bottle instead of pre-bottled water (except for long trips) and I've probably cut down on the consumption of 5-10 water bottles a week (maybe about 50 since I've had my bottle in a month and a half, wow!).
11. I'm going to pick up some flyspray for my horses this afternoon, and I'm going to try Deo Lotion, an earth friendly alternative to the chemical-filled ones, but unlike the citronella/water-based ones, this stuff apparently lasts more than 2 hours and actually works on the house-fly types of bugs. Products with a lot of citronella make my horse break out in hives too.
12. We have a rule in the house about "if it's yellow let it mellow..." at least once.
13. Because of my health condition I need acupuncture/chiropractic and massage therapy. I go to practitioners who use safe, natural products and recycle responsibly. They are also not afraid to recommend organic/alternative products instead of drugs!
There are probably a few more things... I'm good about turning the lights off but NOT about unplugging my appliances.
I'm thinking of switching my bulbs to CFL's but posted my concerns in another forum because I am extremely photo sensitive and can't handle bright light or fluorescent light. I will have to do some more research first.
When I first started I did not know what recycling was. I had to ask. I just started using old fashion common sense. I did a lot of web-home work, and I am still finding out. I fall off the wagon now and then. Although some of the Organic products are more costly, I find that I use less with the same results. Going Green has in the long run started to save me money, and I am now healthier that when I started.
