How to keep being motivated
Posted by Ji Hoon Jhang on October 12, 2007 - 2:32pm.
I have tried to be greener, but sometimes it is way hard to keep going forward with my limited budgets(I am poor grad student). Moreover, beyond the economic reason, just keeping and internalizing this LOFT ideal is really difficult because I couldn't explicitly see the changes that my behavior might have caused, and very few people around me are really into Green things. People, let me know how you keep motivating yourself, and how you reconcile conflicts between your ideals and realities

I don't have problems with motivation because I just stay realistic. I can only make green choices that cost less, or cost the same, as the non-green alternative. Also, for me it's not about seeing what I've done for the planet. It's about the fact that I don't feel I have the right to be wasteful. For example, is it really right to ask for fresh new plastic bags for every purchase, that I will throw away within 20 minutes? I don't think so, and so I just bring my own bags that I reuse constantly. It costs nothing more, and makes me feel better about my impact on the environment. I have found it's alot easier to get support of the people around you if you keep your green choices realistic and rational.

sagartland has got the right idea: we should not be wasteful. Anyway, ALL is Yin/Yang, inhale/exhale etc...to make a balance.

So it is with being green: if you take (energy, resources etc..) .and do not replace it or do green things back, it WILL come back into your life as a worse planet than now later on.

THE GOOD NEWS ARE: yes, one man or woman can make a difference. Look at lime.com. That is one of quite some examples now that shows people are willing to be greener and do it in a way each time they can.

Want to be green and learn how to do it with a limited budget? EASY!

1)   Recycle the most you can and use a tumbler you can reuse for coffee, re use things by buying them in charity or thrift shops in your area, , buy book at library's books shops that is like buying a recycled book because you by a used one)

2)   Turn off the light where you live each time you do not use them

3)   Use libraries (be it libraries itself or college ones) as you can use a computer there for an hour for free and get mucho free info

4)   Use Netflix instead of buying every DVD you see then you can choose what you like to buy

5)   Join an environmental group as they have reduced rates for students! Trust me, students got enough money to party, get CD's, games, even smoke, so they can afford something like $25 (sometimes even less!) for a year to be a member of a cool organization like this one

DO IT FOR YOURSELF, do not worry about people that do not, as, later on, these WILL pay for it somehow (sorry, cosmic law that is and nobody is above it, so it is better to be good anyhow)

Au revoir
