There is no doubt that we live in a toxic world and sometimes our bodies need some help coping with big exposures such as when the neighbor uses a lot of herbicides on their lawn. Here is a famous detox remedy for times when you know that you are chemically overloaded. It is bittersweet with some spice.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about the equivalent of the juice of one lemon)
1/6th of a teaspoon (or a pinch) of cayenne
1 to 2 teaspoons maple syrup
10 oz. filtered water

Combine ingredients in a glass, stir to blend, and drink. Drink a glass for four-five days in a row for best results.

Note: If you choose to drink this while fasting please consult your doctor.

Ward off colds as well
by Statuesqueone on August 30, 2007 - 3:59pm
I used to drink something like this when I was dating a gentleman who was into holistic health. He would have me drink it if I felt a cold or flu coming on. The concotion he made up was hot and seemed like it had garlic in it as well and he used honey instead of maple syrup (the honey and/or syrup is probably just to make it palatable). Not sure it ever really helped but I don't think it hurt and I am into trying any holistic remedies, some of them do work!

More FAQ, if you are interested
by Monmac1 on August 31, 2007 - 11:34am

I know that when I was doing some research on this Lemonade Diet, one of the user’s of this also did mention that they substituted the Maple Syrup with Honey as well. Later during some of my findings, on a FAQ page about the diet, someone asked is they could substitute the Maple Syrup with honey. The answer was NO, didn’t say why, I had to buy the book to find out. So I will just keep to the original recipe, to be safe! Here is one of the other FAQ pages that I thought was most useful out of the 3 or 4 I read.

does it really help
by Vicki_R on September 5, 2007 - 10:56am
I know this is the diet Byonce  when on for her role in Dram Girls.  You must feel so hungry.  Can you drink these drinks all day or do you need to limit how many you take in?  I would love to cleanse my body and loose some weight, however it seems a bit extreme.Did  you find it really helped?

Can't drink things with lemon...

Won't work for me - I can't even tolerate water with lemon! Or drinks with sour mix/lemon. Something about lemon doesn't sit well. :/

LIME covered an article on the pros and cons of detoxing.  Great info.  There are a number of products that cleanse as well and probably do not use lemon if you are really interested.  Just google detoxing or colon cleansers and you get a bunch of them.

In My Opinion

This "diet" is known as the Master Cleanse and in all honesty is not great long term because of how it affects your digestive system if all you are consuming is the drink.  Though you will lose weight and people swear by its ability to cleanse, ultimately it's when you come off the cleanse that you can run into trouble if you aren't under supervision and take in specific foods and in specific amounts since your stomach can go into a form of "shock" from it.

Now, having said that, you can drink it as a medicinal for several reasons, mostly general health and with some modifications, such as adding garlic and heating it, also for cold and flu.  The drink should be added to your daily diet, not replacing it however, preferably in the morning.

Here is why:

Lemon is a natural way to make your body more alkaline which is a better state, especially for cancer prevention since cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline body.

The reason they suggest using maple syrup over honey is the way it metabolizes, however I would say agave nectar would be an improvement even to maple syrup given its lower glycemic index rating...which means it doesn't spike your insulin and is safer for diabetics or hypoglycemics.

The cayenne is good for metabolism and also is a natural anti-viral agent as is garlic if you choose to add that, though it's not part of the original recipe.  I also find lime (no, I'm not being funny) is somewhat tastier like a mohito than lemon and can be substituted.

However, if you are looking for the ultimate in detox, and not just dieting, nothing, and I mean nothing, is more effective than zeolite which removes heavy metals, toxins, viruses and chemicals from your organs and bones with no side effects other than slight dehydration if you don't drink water with it.  I found the best sites for learning more about zeolite are at www.peacefuldetox.com and http://www.liquidzeolite.org/guidelines.html which tells you how to take them from a doctor's perspective.  There are some claims that it actually kills cancer cells, but I'm sure there are more studies that need to be made.

Anyway, that's my two cents for today.  Feel free to reply with any questions.  Cheers to good health!

any mild detox option available?
by Mandy08 on March 27, 2008 - 2:47am

I'd like to detox but I can't go for the extreme solution like fasting, drinking only juices for days. I don't know it is possible to fast and still have your regular day job + home tasks, cooking, taking care of your kids... Personally I can't.

Does anyone know something easy to follow? I am not looking to lose weight in particular (it would be nice though). I want something easy to follow and would clean my body from toxins. Thanks !

To lose weight
by kristin7 on March 29, 2008 - 2:35am

To lose weight permanently, we don't need more of the same old complicated and upsetting dietary rules and regulations. We need a simple, practical and healthy way of eating that will compliment, and not try to change our normal eating habits.

You can explore http://www.mamaherb.com regarding natural ways offered by public for losing weight and you can see all the comments for it and to how many people it really helped so far.

Fresh juices
by yournewbestfriend on August 18, 2008 - 3:38pm

I've heard that a good way to detox and clean out is to drink freshly squeezed (none of the bottled grocery store stuff) juice for a day or a few days. I haven't tried it but am thinking about it for tomorrow - this weekend was brutal on me!

What do you guys think?
