Foods That Bring You Back
Posted by dancingqueen on June 4, 2007 - 6:16pm.
Summertime always reminds me of Barbecues, Smores and the Good Humor Truck.  We would run outside whenever we heard that music.  My kids still do the same thing.  It's amazing how food and the smell of the grill can transport you back to a special time.  When I introduced my boys to s'mores, it was a  memorable experience.  We didn't have the campfire, so it wasn't quite authentic, but they got the jist.

childhood memories.

Yes definitely certain foods that we generally have during certain seasons bring back so much memories and feelings. What really brings me back to my childhood is the ice cream from the ice cream truck, I remember the kids in my block had fun chasing him after he would leave, with a ice cream cone in one hand,  we never catched up to it, and we continued to do so.  :)

Smores remind of me winter for some reason though.

That icecream truck really has had an impact on many generations.  Interesting that smores would remind you of winter.  Did you grow up in a warm climate?

Yes, I grew up in a really warm climate actually. (A desert)

We usually camped out during winter and that's when we would have smores :)

taking me back

I think that both music and food can bring you back to the exact time and place.  When I hear a particular song or eat a particular food, I can tell ou where I was when I was eating it and who I was with.  It's nice to know that something so simple like that can take me back and I can relive those good memories.

I agree-what do you think it is?  When my oldest thinks of a time of year, he always puts down some sort of food.  It makes him feel safe and happy.  I guess icecream in the summer can always make you feel good and hot cocoa in the winter can always warm you up.  If nothing else, he can always make those things to bring him back home.
