Green Kitty Litter
Posted by Joel Sink on September 22, 2007 - 10:28pm.
image just wanted to share my experience using "greener" cat litter. have used scooping litter for years, but recently decided i wanted to use something different. tried pine litter, almost looks like large sawdust. at first i was really irritated with how much more of it makes it's way out of the litter box and all over my house. after a few days though, i realized that i was scooping a lot less of it out of the litter box and therefore putting less "stuff" in the garbage. i guess the old clay scoop litter is so much heavier and bulkier when saturated and the new pine litter is just absorbing the liquids. i'm still not happy to have so much of it getting tracked all over the house, but i'm happy that my cats aren't breathing all of the clay dust and i'm tossing a lot less into the garbage.

I have used the pine litters in the past and find them excellent. However, my house rabbit also uses the cat litter boxes and pine is not good for them. I have been using a natural Arm and Hammer litter but the one I really like the best is The World's Best Cat Litter, which is made from corn. And, when I scoop the litter boxes, I use biodegradeable "doggie bags" made from, I believe, cornstarch. They are very inexpensive at pet stores, I think I got 100 for $5.00. It beats plastic trash grocery or garbage bags, and, since I use my own bags when I shop, my supply of the forever after grocery sack has declined significantly.

There are some great recommendations of some "earth friendlier" options in this forum here

Hope that helps!
