CA tomatoes free of Salmonella
Posted by GreenbeanGirl on June 10, 2008 - 7:55pm.

The nation-wide tomato salmonella outbreak has grocers throwing out all tomoates in an attempt to protect customers health.

Yesterday the government cleared tomatoes grown in California and Florida as safe for consuming.

However, what is going to be done with all those wasted tomatoes? Composting perhaps?

Does composting kill salmonella?

The heat in a backyard compost pile often isn't enough to kill bacteria and fungal diseases. Municipal and larger-scale composting, maybe. It's a very interesting question. Let me check with some gardening buddies and get back to ya.
