I just became involved in an effort called the Truthful Labeling Coalition. (TLC).
It seems several of the largest chicken producers in the US inject or pump in to their fresh chicken added sodium, water, carageenan (a seaweed extract), and other additives - and then label them as "All Natural." They are allowed to do this because of a loophole in the USDA's "natual" labeling guidelines. This pumped-up chicken contains more than 800% more sodium than real natural chicken.
The TLC is urging the USDA to reform their labeling guidelines for fresh chicken so only truly natural chicken can be labeled as such.
If you enjoy natural chicken and would like to join the effort, visit:

I'm not sure about the landscaper paycheck issue, but I definitely know that pumped up chicken can contain more sodium than a large order of Mickey D's french fries. If you read the back of the label you can see just what is in there - usually salt, water, carageenan, phosphates and other stuff - stuff that is not usually found in fresh natural chicken, and not at all healthy.
I am a member of the TLC like the poster above, and I would highly recommend checking out what they stand for - www.truthfullabeling.org. It might just help you in figuring out what is in your chicken.
ps - consumers paid more than $2b last year for the solution injected into these birds.
