Organic Liquors, Beers, and Wines

I was just pondering this the other day, as I was reading through Vicki's popular post on Wine

How familiar is everyone with organic and local versions of their favorite drinks?

Working for LIME I get lots of fantastic opportunities to attend Green Events like Green Drinks (to name one of many, and a great option to find like minded people in your local area.)

I am always amazed to find all these new (to me at least) local and organic versions of Beers, Wines, and Liquors being served that I have never heard of before, but am always eager :-D to taste.

I often find them to be much superior products to their mass produced brethren and try to jot down all the names that I can (the only way I'll remember them after a good night of Green Festivities...hehe) For some reason about 70% of the time what I taste I find that I like, and like more than it's non-organic counterpart. I've been lucky to find some real gems out there like some of the beers over at Butte Creek.

I truly find it amazing how sustainable these products are, the level of care and attention that is used all the way through the manufacturing process, talk about really reducing the distance from farm to mug!

Does anyone else have the same feelings or experiences? And do we have any home brewers in the house? are there other members out there familiar with some local and organic varieties they love and would like to share?

For those of you that enjoy a good drink now and then you may also enjoy Hans' Blog or maybe you would like to share some of your own favorite Green watering holes over in LIME Local.... (P.S. don't forget to add your reviews :-)

Home Brewing
by jjackson on May 24, 2007 - 1:13pm

That is definitely something I'm going to tackle at some point in the future.

I have a friend who brewed up some mean bourbon at home, it was good, but really... well... the word "mean" definitely applies.

I'm eager to do some beer brewing as soon as i have the time and space to do so.

impressed with green vineyards
by Harley on June 7, 2007 - 10:07am
Just finished reading a section in Wine Spectator about vineyard in California dedicating themselves to being green.  I was amazed at how dedicated some of them are.  They are using solar panels, recycling water and using building materials like mud which stays cool in their facilities.  I was truly impressed and now will buy their products to keep the chain going.

Organic Beverages
by bluejinx61 on June 10, 2007 - 3:57pm
I have, I thought for over thirty-five years, been vegetarian/vegan. Until recently I had no idea that beer, wine and spirits were compromised by animal products and or by products. I sometimes go through life with blinders. As the photo indicates we have deer. I have recently started my own vineyard. Despite fencing around the entire area with solar chargers and individual fences around each vine they are defeating me. Hopefully some subset of plans will prevail before I pass and I will defeat them. Brewing beer could be an immense amount of fun but processing a wine from organic/vege methods is something that will help me live longer. I feed the suckers all winter - they should eventually let my vines live. R C Chopyak

labor intensive
by Vicki_R on June 11, 2007 - 12:29pm
Is this a vineyard for fun in your own backyard or is this a business venture.  I can't tell by the photo, but are you in snow?  If so, where is your vineyard located?  From this article, I understand becoming an organic vineyard is labor intensive.  What are you using for guidlines?

Wolaver's certified organic ales are made with pure water, certified organic malts and hops, and our special house yeast.

They are celebrating 10 years of brewing great organic beers! Good beer and I not a beer drinker.

I'd love to try the beer
by Clementine16 on July 17, 2007 - 4:05pm
I have never tried organic beer.  I actually haven't looked for it before.  My boyfriend will be interested to check out the website posted above.  He is a beer drinker and loves to find something new that he like.  I have tried a few different organic wines that I have enjoyed.  Of course I can't remember the name off the top of my head - I normally just remember the label to pick it out at the store.  I was actually pleasantly surprised at the number of options to choose from.  It's great that more and more people are beginning to look for organic options when making their purchases.

LIME just posted this video all about organic beer tasting.  Thought you might be interested.  Organic beer is made with real heart and soul.  You get so much more than just a good tasting beer.  You get one that is all natural and brewed with integrity.

That video is great.... very interesting and full of info!  Thank you for posting it.  I hadn't seen it on the website.  Has anyone seen organic beer or wines at restaurants?  I haven't in my area and I do look when I'm out to dinner.  I actually haven't seeked out ahead of time to try to find one that serves it though.  That might be my next project :)

Organic Beer
by Clementine16 on July 26, 2007 - 9:26am
I was just on vacation and while away we did a beer tasting at a nearby brewery.  I was happy to find that they showed us two different organic beers as part of the presentation.  They discussed the making of these beers and how it differs from the usual process and also let everyone taste them.  It was great to see that they recognize the importance of products like these and are doing their part for the environment and for consumers.

They were really good
by Clementine16 on July 30, 2007 - 9:45am
I was actually in Orlando, FL and went to Sea World which is owned by Anheuser Busch.  They do a beer tasting at their brewery on the park grounds.  They showed us a lager and a pale ale that they are now producing.  I thought both were very tasty and they said that they could be easily found at most local stores, so that is exciting.

i'm going there to
by Vicki_R on July 30, 2007 - 4:15pm
We're going in November there as well.  I'l have to check it out.  Thanks for the info.  By the way, how was Sea World.  Is it worth going to?

I enjoy it
by Clementine16 on July 31, 2007 - 4:21pm
My family really likes to go to Sea World.  They have so many different things to do and we love seeing the animals.  I think it's worth it!  They also offer a free second visit if you return within 7 days of your first visit.  It's a very good deal if you want to go back or even spend 2 half days there.  My favorite is Disney World but Sea World would come in close second as far as Orlando attractions go.

must see
by Vicki_R on July 31, 2007 - 6:23pm
We're taking our boys for the first time to Disney World in November.  Of course we are doing the Magic Kingdom, MGM and then we were planning on doing Sea World.  Did you swim with the Dolphins?  I did hear it is a great place for kids.  Any recommended sites there that are a must see?

Shamu!
by Clementine16 on July 31, 2007 - 10:05pm

I'm sure you will have so much fun at Disney World!  Your boys will love it!  It's great taking children there for the first time.  Actually, it's great taking anyone there for the first time, even if they are not children, haha.  Such a magical place.  IWe did Magic Kingdom and Epcot this year.  Both were fun but it was very hot!  This was my first time there during the summer months.  I think you will really enjoy Sea World.  It's amazing to see the animals so up close.  We did not swim with the dolphins but I've heard that is a great experience.  Definitely see Shamu, the dolphins, the penguins, and the sharks.  The Shamu night show is also fun but that means being there all day.

very excited
by Vicki_R on August 1, 2007 - 10:22am
They are all pumped up for it.  The summer months are so hot there, we used to live in Fla.  It can be very oppresive.  I think we are going to skip the swimming with the dolphins as well.  Thanks for the info.
