If you’re missing the bracing, beautiful, snowier winters of yore, check out Gorp.com’s guide to national parks that are almost guaranteed to be snowy right now. You can mush, ski, snowshoe, hike, gawk at errant elk, and at some parks you can even––if you’re very brave––set up your four-season tent and sub, sub-zero sleeping bags and camp.

Here’s a sample from Gorp’s guide to what you’ll find at those parks. For the full story, visit here.

Acadia National Park, Maine
Activities: Cross-country skiing, hiking, ice fishing, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing
Only in Winter Vision: The turbulent Atlantic seen through the bare branches of winter.
Wildlife Potential: White-tailed deer, red fox, snowshoe hare (camouflaged white for the winter), beaver, and many resident birds.

Denali National Park, Alaska
Activities: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife watching, dogsledding.
Only in Winter Vision: Northern lights—Aurora borealis—in the clear winter sky above a snowy field.
Wildlife Potential: More than two dozen species of birds, bears as early as March, and plenty of moose. (Yield!) And if you’re lucky, you may catch sight of packs of wolves as they search for winter-weakened prey.
