Florals are popping up everywhere this summer — green carpet events,
organic luncheons and eco-friendly weddings. From pinky pastels to black and white, there’s a whole field of choices. Below are some tips on how to go floral the earth friendly way.
Scope out vintage. Check out your local vintage and second-hand shops — or find a new one in Elle magazine’s
Vintage Shopping Guide. When hunting through the racks, look for high waist skirts, funky belts, and floral dresses with ruffles. Avoid shoulder pads (please!) and overly high necklines.
Refresh your closet. Tailors can work wonders with your old floral prints. Try shortening up what you already have for summertime. Or update a boxy look by asking your local tailor to sew in an en vogue and ever-flattering elastic empire waist.
Create do-it-yourself pieces out of unused fabrics. Take advantage of the floral trend by adding a few appliqués to an old basic. And don’t be intimidated by the fancy accent — an appliqué is just a decorative patch, and can be sewn on accordingly. Try cutting and sewing on contrasting flowers like yellow and red, or a similar hues like multiple shades of blue. Simple poppies can be made easily: cut concentric circles of fabric and sew onto your shirt or skirt with a few stitches in the middle of the circle.
