Trend Watch of the Week: The White Button Up
Posted by Summer Bowen on June 1, 2008 - 3:54pm.
Everyone’s got one in their closet: a white collared button-up dress shirt. With Memorial Day behind us it’s time to bring out this classic fave. Here are four fresh looks that will keep your dress shirt working for you all summer long.

Tucked into a high-waist skirt – This look is super classy and confident paired with vintage pearls and some black high heels. Great for a dressy business dinner, or an evening out with colleagues.

At the beach – Forget buying a brand new beach cover up. Throw the white button-up on over your bikini and shorts, button the middle three buttons, and be on your way.

White on white – Double up your white shirt with some white trousers. Add some turquoise or gold jewelry, nude heals and you’ll be looking white hot on warm summer nights.

Over jeans with a belt – This is a great going out look. Even a boxy white shirt transforms into a flattering outfit. Try it with a belt, scarf, or even a ribbon tie.

If you’re on the market for a new white dress shirt, check your secondhand stores like Crossroads Trading Company first, where there are mounds and mounds of button-up shirts. As for sizing – with more and more wear, your crisp cotton shirt will shrink, so choose the larger size and avoid the eventual buttons-are-hanging-on-for-dear-life look. Plus, all of the styles above look better (and are comfier!) with a button up that’s a little roomier and the piece will last longer in your eco-fashionable wardrobe.
