Chunky, tribal, sparkly, vintage... This season's fashionistas are dripping with jewelry. The huge spring ‘08 accessories storm can take a toll on the environment and the pocketbook. With the seedy diamond and gold mining industries, and fast fashion piling up in our landfills, we certainly want to take a look at alternatives before purchasing mounds of accessories.

So, what's a sparkle loving sustainable fashionista to do? Raid your jewelry box and make like Mr. T!

Combine necklaces, throw on multiple bracelets, and dig out that pair of old plastic hoops from your 80s prom. From costume to classy, combine it like a rockstar. You can avoid looking too Punky Brewster by pairing big jewelry with subdued clothing.

It's the perfect time to perform surgery on those unloved singlet earrings you've been hanging on to — bust out the needle nose pliers and combine a few strands into a charm-braceletesque pair of drop earrings.

If you're still sick of your old stuff, get a few gals together for a jewelry swap. And if the urge to splurge is still eating a hole through your organic cotton tote, go vintage at ebay, estate sales, or take a look around for creative designers that are upcycling old junk into new jewelry.
