Who Needs Hand Sanitizers?
Posted by Su Avasthi on October 30, 2006 - 10:04pm.

I realize that I'm behaving recklessly. I understand that I'm living on the edge. But I'm not convinced that I need to use hand sanitizer on a daily basis.

I have nothing against a gel that allegedly kills 99.9 percent of all household bacteria and viruses. But since I'm not much of a germ-o-phobe, I wonder whether the average person actually needs to decontaminate themselves on a regular basis.

Now, I'd feel differently if traveled regularly on planes, cruise ships or subways. I'd also reconsider if I taught first-grade, worked in a hospital, or was running for Congress.

But since I'm rarely exposed to that much humanity, I think it's overkill to tote around a bottle of sanitizer in my handbag. I'm confident that my body can cope if I fail to disinfect at a second's notice.

Studies have shown that there's no good reason to use antibacterial soaps. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends hand sanitizers, as long as its alcohol content is above 60 percent. Their research shows that using alcohol-based sanitizers is as effective as washing your hands.

It's strange that I feel this way, considering that I'm normally a big fan of cosmetics and beauty products. I like to primp. I have an arsenal of hand lotions and creams. I don't take camping trips longer than two days, because my appreciation for products starts to exceed my appreciation of nature.

But I'm just not sold on this stuff. The way I see it, if I'm going to carry a product on a regular basis, I'd much rather keep a rich, great-smelling moisturizer in my bag. That way, my hands won't dry out after I've washed them.

Then again, by throwing caution to the wind, I'm probably destined to get a bug or two this winter. If you're a convert, go ahead and convince of the error of my ways. Maybe it's time to become a believer.

Waste of money....

I agree with anonymous from Canada.....another marketing ploy that plays on our phobias and fears!! My son took a Health class in high school and they had a whole section on how these alleged "germ killers" are worthless! Germs are a normal part of life and living in a bubble is the worst thing you can do for yourself or your children. Unless of course they have a compromised immune system or some other malady. Hey, if we never got sick we wouldn't appreciate our health as much!!!

If you go on the NYC subway...

it's perfectly reasonable to use hand sanitzer. People clip their nails on the subway - I've even seen someone go to the bathroom.

Too much - too little

As a scientist I am constantly shaking my head at all the products that kill "germs" .  The kill 99.99% which means that the 0.01 % are resistant to the wash, gel, cleaner, etc... This 0.01 % is now free to go forth and multiply until it comes in contact with a different  product, and again there is a small population of resistant bacteria that survive.  and so on and so forth until we have helped create a super resistant "germ".  It is scientifically irresponsible for all these companies to produce these types of products.  Our immune systems are already under terrible assault in my opinion because we have become so "clean" and they cannot handle the simplest allergens or organisms - I don't think creating more resistant bacteria is the answer.  I have a 2 automimmune diseases myself and am trying to research why these seem to be a growing problem in the past 20 years or so.

Your body has an immune system, and the problem with sanitizers is that 0.01% of germs they do not kill are of course the strongest germs, which means that the strongest ones are reproducing. Sanitizers are more likely making germs worse overall.
